I think if it were a straight choice between letting Jelavic go for nothing now, or paying his wages for the 18 months, I think we should let him go.

Agreed. Where they'll be sick is that they've been trying to buy a 'Payet' from France for years - we buy pretty much the only major French player they haven't gone for and it comes off!
